A meet with Jimmy Wales & Sue Gardner..

Would you believe that??

Well, if you don't know who Jimmy Wales is, I'd like you to go to Wikipedia and do a search for his name!

There's a reason I told you to do that!

So do it, come back and continue reading!!

He was here to launch the Wikipedia Academy, in Kiruba's office! Along with him came Sue Gardner.. Wow, you don't get to meet such great people very often!

Jimmy Wales was very casual and he had a really nice talk with me while having lunch! He patiently answered our questions and also gave us a lot of hope saying Wiki grew a lot during the dot come burst and if it was not for the dot com burst, Wiki would have become moderated and hence, it would not be as famous as it is now.. He told that presently all countries are in recession and this could be the time for young entrepreneurs to step in and grab their opportunities! Also when asked about what plans he had for web 3.0, he told a simple "I don't know"!! :)

He was such a cool fellow with no airs about him, that I had to wonder if I had actually met the FOUNDER of WIKIPEDIA! :):):)

That's Jimmy Wales (Jimbo) and Sue talkin to us at the Wikipedia Academy!

It was an "unconference" style Wiki Academy!!

It was quite an interactive session with Sue joining in!

That's Ravi and Kiruba! Ravi did the small session on how to contribute to Wikipedia!

It was quite an experience! Thanks a lot to Kiruba Shankar ( my cousin) for this really great opportunity!

P.S: I have a photo with him, which is with my cousin! For now I'll post photos from the Wikipedia Academy unconference! START CONTRIBUTING TO WIKIPEDIA

Btw, for those who wanna know what the Wikipedia Academy does, check these out
1) Kiruba's post on Wikipedia Academy
2) The Hindu's report

Update: The photo has been updated at the top:):):)

  1. The opening sentence.

Am I the cause for it?

Or more appropriately, my dumbness? :)

  2. that is damn cool ... more often than not .. a lot of 'hot shots' in the field don't have that air of superiority and are pretty easy to talk with .. i guess that is also what makes then the 'big shots' in the first place .. kinda like a necessity may be .. hmmm contributing back to the wiki ... maybe i will .. though i dont know what i should change first .. ahhh i have an idea .. :D *evil smile*

  4. Hey Shravan, you seem to be having an intellectually stimulating time.

But ya, how does one contribute to wikipedia and what about false info? I've been thinking about this since i saw a cartoon clip where the student rights something in his exams and then goes home to

    ReplyDelete
  5. Oops. stranded midway.

Ya, i mean the student goes home and tries to modify wikipedia to confirm with his answer in the hope that even his examiner refers to wikipedia for checking the papers.

So how does one prevent that?

  6. @divinediu, Know what?? Not many people actually know Jimbo!! That's the cause for the opening sentence!! :);):)

and you dumb?? you're highly intellectual!! :)

  7. @ Joel, I totally agree!! All these big shots never seem to have an air about them, like what you said, I guess it's a necessity..

LOL @ the evil smile, if you're gonna change something wrongly, you'll get a warning from Wiki!! (i.e., if you use an account, else you're ip will be warned for a few times before being banned!)

  8. @ crystal, for once, you're jealous of me!! I've always been jealous of the way you write:):)!

    @P.S: It's my cousin's co working office!! :):)

    Yaa.. lucky me!!

  9. @ Rakesh, I guess you should join the Academy!! Guess what, you can't do any stupid changes in Wiki! Like there's a log of changes for every page and there's a rollback feature! so if you change Delhi to be in Pakistan, the next moment, it shows in someone's log and it is rolled back or the change is eliminated!! :)

That's why Wiki is amazingly spam free!

  18. @ greg, I checked the link out, and it had loads of crap about Jimbo!!

But I never told I was having a business partnership with him! So why should I be careful?

P.S: He's one of the biggest person in the web 2.0, and so I'm really happy on meeting him!

  19. @ Richa, lolz! don't think I'm bragging but it had a bit of hardwork as well:):) I'm doing a small internship with Kiruba, remember!

  20. @ Mehreen, Hey!! What if you're in Pakistan?? it's not a single academy! anyone can start a wikipedia academy! Just that the intent must be to contribute to Wiki!

you need not have an office or something, you can organise meets at the cafe (with Wifi access)!

and btw, it's not just for IT professionals, it is for the common man as well!

I'd be glad to help you, just send a mail across to shravanvijayaprasad@gmail.com
